Devotion to the Sacred Heart Granite Memorial

The Devotion to the Sacred Heart Granite Memorial is an arch-shaped granite headstone featuring a beautifully sculpted image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus — Sagrado Corazón de Jesús — one of the most beloved symbols in global Catholic devotion and especially central to Hispanic, Filipino, Polish, and Irish Catholic communities. The Sacred Heart devotion traces its formal history to the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647–1690), a French Visitation nun at Paray-le-Monial, who received apparitions of Christ showing her His heart surrounded by flames, encircled by a crown of thorns, surmounted by a cross, and radiating divine light. The devotion was confirmed by the Church and the Sacred Heart of Jesus was canonically established as a liturgical feast in 1856 by Pope Pius IX. The image represents Christ's infinite love for humanity, His compassion for those who suffer, and the mercy He extends to every penitent soul.

The elegant arch top of this headstone echoes the shape of church doorways and tabernacle arches, giving the memorial a sacred, chapel-like presence in the cemetery. The sculpted Sacred Heart — flames, crown of thorns, and cross visible in relief — is positioned centrally, with the full polished panel below providing generous space for names, dates, a portrait medallion, and inscriptions. Common Sacred Heart epitaphs include "Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, en Vos confío" (Sacred Heart of Jesus, in You I trust), "Coeur de Jésus, j'ai confiance en toi" (Heart of Jesus, I trust in You — St. Margaret Mary's own prayer), "Cor Jesu Sacratissimum, miserere nobis" (Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us), and "Jesús, en Vos confío" (Jesus, I trust in You). Spanish and French inscriptions can be combined with English for bilingual memorials.

The 9-12 June feast of the Sacred Heart and the 15 June feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary are significant dates for families choosing this design. First Friday devotions — monthly Mass and Communion on the first Friday of each month, kept for nine consecutive months — are also associated with the Sacred Heart.

Available in seven granite colors: Galaxy Black, Indian Black, Grey, Bahama Blue, Bahama Blue Light, Indian Red, and Paradiso Old. Indian Red carries warm devotional resonance; Galaxy Black gives the sharpest portrait and inscription contrast.
