Our Lady of Grace Catholic Granite Headstone

The Our Lady of Grace Catholic Granite Headstone honors one of the most beloved titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary and among the most powerful intercessors in Catholic tradition. "Our Lady of Grace" (Notre-Dame de Grâce in French; Nuestra Señora de Gracia in Spanish) refers specifically to the Miraculous Medal vision granted to Saint Catherine Labouré in Paris in 1830, in which Mary appeared standing on a globe with rays of light streaming from her rings — light representing the graces she obtains for those who ask her. The image of Mary with outstretched hands and rays of grace descending from her rings is one of the most immediately recognizable Marian images in Catholicism worldwide.

Choosing Our Lady of Grace for a headstone expresses the deceased's Marian devotion — perhaps they wore the Miraculous Medal, prayed the Rosary daily, belonged to the Legion of Mary or a Sodality of Our Lady, or had a particular devotion to Mary's maternal intercession at the moment of death. Standard dimensions are approximately 24 to 30 inches wide by 36 to 48 inches tall by 4 to 6 inches thick, set on a granite base of 26 to 32 by 10 by 6 inches. Our Lady is carved in three-dimensional relief on the polished granite face, with rays of grace and an optional globe beneath her feet.

Traditional Catholic inscriptions for this headstone include: "Our Lady of Grace, pray for him/her," "Mary, Queen of Heaven, intercede for her/his soul," the Ave Maria in Latin or English, the Hail Holy Queen (Salve Regina), or Revelation 12:1 ("A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head"). For Irish-American Catholic families, the Irish form "A Mhuire, a Mháthair" (O Mary, O Mother) adds cultural resonance. French-Canadian families may prefer "Notre-Dame de Grâce, priez pour lui/elle." Hispanic families often engrave "Nuestra Señora de Gracia, ruega por él/ella" or "Ave María, llena eres de gracia."

Crafted from durable granite memorial stone, this headstone maintains its Marian relief and polished finish through decades of outdoor Catholic cemetery conditions.
