Saint Jude Companion Catholic Upright Headstone

The Saint Jude Companion Catholic Upright Headstone honors both the memory of two loved ones and the intercession of Saint Jude Thaddeus — the Apostle and patron saint of desperate causes, hopeless cases, and those in deep distress. Devotion to Saint Jude has been particularly strong in the United States since the 1920s, when the Claretian Fathers at Chicago's Our Lady of Guadalupe Church popularized the novena to the saint. Choosing Saint Jude's image for a companion headstone carries a powerful message: that the family entrusts the eternal souls of their loved ones to the saint's powerful intercession before God, and that the strength of their own faith carried them through difficulty.

This companion upright headstone is designed for two individuals sharing a side-by-side cemetery plot. Standard companion dimensions are approximately 36 to 44 inches wide by 28 to 36 inches tall by 6 to 8 inches thick, set on a granite base of 38 to 46 by 14 by 6 inches — compliant with most Catholic diocesan and cemetery regulations governing upright companion monuments. The broad polished front face provides generous space for both individuals' names, life dates, and inscriptions, with Saint Jude's image — traditionally shown holding a medallion of Christ's face (the Image of Edessa) and a staff or flame — occupying the upper register or central panel.

Traditional Catholic inscriptions for a Saint Jude headstone include: "Saint Jude, pray for them," the traditional Saint Jude novena prayer closing ("St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us"), or simply "Patron Saint of Hope." Scripture appropriate to Saint Jude's themes includes Jude 1:2 ("May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you") and Romans 8:28 ("We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him"). For a surviving spouse, one panel receives the complete inscription at the time of first passing; the second panel carries only the name, with the date reserved for future engraving — standard living-spouse practice accepted at all Catholic cemeteries.
